| On the base of Central Region of Latvian Naval Forces in 1999 Flotilla of Coast Guard ships were established. This flotilla was functioning as a Coast Guard Service of Latvia. |
| Reorganizing the Flotilla of Coast Guard ships, on the 1st of July, 2004 Latvian Coast Guard Service (LCGS) was established. LCGS is under command of Latvian Naval Forces. CGS functions twenty-four hours a day and accounts to the Commander of Latvian Naval Forces. |
| Implementing international treaties and Latvian Republic laws and regulations, LCGS fills duties as: |
| | To endow Search and Rescue (SAR) operations control and coordination in the LCGS responsibility area; |
| | To endow oil pollution abolishment operations control and coordination; |
| | To organize and to coordinate events to control implementation of laws and regulations that establishes order how Latvia's aquatorium has been used. |
| | In cooperation with Marine and Inland Water Administration to control protection of environment and fishing laws and regulations; |
| | To organize, to lead and to coordinate units of Latvian Naval Forces which are commanded to officiate of Coast Guard; |
| | Functions as a administrative board and national communication center in accordance with International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS); |
| | Endows as a national communication center in EU shipping security network SafeSeaNET. |
